PROFESSOR Haruna Musa Dambatta has been elected as the new Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK) at the election which took place on Tuesday on the university campus.
Dambatta secured 853 votes, well ahead of Professor Mahmoud Umar Sani, who polled 367 votes, and Professor Muhammad Sani Gumel, who got 364 votes.
Other candidates included Professor Adamu Idris Tanko who polled 161 votes and Professor Bashir Muhammad Fagge with 18 votes.
Professor Dambatta will succeed the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, who has led the institution since August 2020 as the 11th substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
A respected scholar in polymer and colour chemistry, Professor Dambatta holds Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Bayero University (1991), a Master’s degree in Polymer Chemistry (1999), and a PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (2009).
He began his academic career at BUK in 1993 as a Graduate Assistant and rose to become a professor in 2019.
Dambatta has held several key administrative positions, including Head, Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Director of SERVICOM, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) at BUK before his emergence as Vice Chancellor.
