THE Governing Council of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has approved the appointment of Professor Uduma O. Uduma as the next Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
News Point Nigeria reports that his appointment takes effect from February 11, 2026, following the completion of the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor.
The announcement was made after the Council’s consideration and ratification of the recommendation of the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board, which oversaw the rigorous appointment process.
Professor Uduma, a distinguished scholar of Philosophy and Logic, and a Barrister-at-Law, brings to the position decades of academic and administrative experience.
Born on January 30, 1966, he obtained his first degree from the University of Calabar, where he graduated as the best student in his faculty, before earning his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Philosophy from the University of Lagos. He was later called to the Nigerian Bar in 2007.
A seasoned academic, Professor Uduma has held several leadership roles within the university system. At NOUN, he has served as Head of Department, Director of General Studies, Director of Academic Planning, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
He also served as Study Centre Director in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where he successfully grew student enrolment from 496 to over 2,000 through innovative administrative reforms and academic engagement.
Beyond administration, Professor Uduma is widely recognized for his scholarly contributions and has a strong research presence, with significant visibility on Google Scholar and other academic platforms.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, His Excellency, Mallam Isa Yuguda, CON, expressed the Council’s confidence in Professor Uduma’s ability to consolidate the university’s growth and sustain its reputation as Nigeria’s foremost open and distance learning institution.
“The University looks forward to Professor Uduma’s leadership and vision as he assumes office on 11th February 2026.
“We are confident that his expertise and experience will drive the University’s continued growth and success,” Yuguda stated.
