RENOWNED academic, manpower development expert, and Pro-Chancellor of Prime University, Kuje-Abuja, Dr Kabir Kabo Usman, has urged parents and education policymakers to take urgent steps in shaping the nation’s future by combining moral upbringing at home with a science-and-skills-oriented education system.
Dr Kabir gave this charge in an address presented on his behalf at the 2025 Graduation Ceremony and 10th Anniversary of Al-Noor Academy, held at Wuse II, Abuja. The address was delivered by Malam Mustapha Badamasi Atiku, Bursar of Prime University.
Drawing from his experience as a former lecturer and curriculum director at Manchester University in the UK, Dr Kabir said that successful nations emphasise character-building at home and cutting-edge knowledge—especially in science and technology—in schools.
He called on Nigerian parents to emulate such models by instilling patriotism and discipline in their children.
He described science and technology as “the backbone of economic and social development,” and called for a shift in Nigeria’s education focus to align with global best practices.
Dr Kabir, who also served as Director-General of the Centre for Management Development (CMD) from 2010 to 2018, emphasized the need to equip Nigeria’s large youth population with the right skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
This, he said, would combat rising unemployment and reduce the incidence of crime, such as kidnapping, banditry, and social unrest.
He quoted African leaders, including Nelson Mandela, who said, “Education is the only thing that can change anything,” and Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, who believed education fosters tolerance and humility.
Also speaking at the event, Dr Ibrahim Dada, Chairman of the Al-Noor Academy Governing Board, praised the institution’s resilience over the past decade, saying: “This milestone is a celebration of excellence, resilience, and purpose. I urge our graduating students to seek knowledge endlessly and strive to impact their communities and the world.”
The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, who is also a Professor of Science Education, presented awards and prizes to outstanding students, staff, and alumni for excellence and dedication.
Al-Noor Academy, established ten years ago under the International Centre for Islamic Culture and Education (ICICE), operates within the Al-Noor Mosque premises in Abuja.
The school integrates conventional education with Islamic teachings, Tahfeez (Qur’anic memorisation), and adult literacy programmes.
