AT least 62 kidnapped victims have regained their freedom after a decisive airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) shattered a notorious bandits’ camp in Jigawa Sawai, Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development in a statement released by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, on Sunday.
According to the statement, the military action was targeted at the hideout of Muhammadu Fulani, a notorious bandit kingpin whose gang has been responsible for repeated attacks across Katsina and neighboring Zamfara.
The strike, carried out at 5:10pm on Saturday, forced the bandits to flee, creating an opportunity for the victims to break free.
“The Nigerian Air Force strike on Jigawa Sawai disrupted the camp of a notorious bandit, Muhammadu Fulani.
“This forced the terrorists to abandon their stronghold, paving the way for the dramatic escape of 62 kidnapped victims who had been held in captivity,” the government said.
Out of the escapees, 12 victims are currently receiving treatment at Matazu General Hospital for injuries and health complications, while 16 others are under military care at the Army Forward Operating Base in Kaiga Malamai.
The majority of the victims were abducted from Sayaya village during a night raid on Monday, August 11, 2025, when Fulani’s gang stormed the community, terrorizing residents and taking dozens hostage.
The bandits have also been linked to attacks in Matazu, Kankia, Dutsinma, and parts of Kano State.
During interviews with the rescued victims, it was revealed that the militants fled in panic after the bombardment, leaving their captives behind to escape in multiple directions.
In reaction to the development, Governor Malam Dikko Radda commended the gallantry of security forces, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to end banditry in Katsina.
The government also confirmed the deployment of the Quick Response Wing of the Nigerian Air Force to reinforce peace in Matazu, Bakori, and other troubled communities.
“We assure families that the rescued victims will be reunited with their loved ones after undergoing full medical examinations. The government remains committed to restoring peace and ensuring that Katsina communities are safe from banditry,” the statement added.
