THE Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has commenced a high-level strategic retreat in Kano State to harmonise reports ahead of a comprehensive review of remuneration packages for political, public, and judicial office holders across Nigeria.
News Point Nigeria reports that declaring the retreat open, RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Usman, who also serves as the Federal Commissioner representing Gombe State, underscored the exercise as a crucial step toward strengthening Nigeria’s governance structure.
Usman reminded participants that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) expressly empowers RMAFC to determine the remuneration of political, public, and judicial office holders at all tiers of government.
He revealed that the Commission had earlier initiated processes for the review, noting that the move was in line with prevailing economic realities and global best practices.
“The Commission carefully considered a wide range of perspectives, including memoranda from stakeholders, public hearings, and ministerial submissions, while also drawing from economic indicators and remuneration practices in other countries,” Usman said.
The chairman stressed that the review goes beyond increasing or adjusting figures but focuses on sustainability, affordability, and fairness.
“The Commission has equally analysed the capacity of government to implement the review package, ensuring that recommendations remain fair, realistic, and sustainable,” he explained.
He disclosed that the committee was tasked with harmonising earlier reports and addenda into a single document to provide a comprehensive framework for implementation.
Usman appealed to participants at the retreat to leverage their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and expertise in order to craft a balanced remuneration framework that will serve the interests of all Nigerians.
“This retreat must produce outcomes that are balanced and beneficial to all,” he emphasised.
The Kano retreat, according to RMAFC, is expected to set a sustainable, transparent, and equitable framework for determining the pay of political leaders, judges, and other public office holders, in line with the Commission’s constitutional mandate.
