A 33-YEAR-OLD Nigerian man, Segun Ogundipe, has been sentenced to five years in prison in the United Kingdom for raping and sexually assaulting a woman in Gloucester.
Ogundipe, who lived on Tuffley Lane, was found guilty at Gloucester Crown Court of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and assault by penetration, despite denying all charges. He will also face deportation after serving his sentence.
His conviction comes just days after another Nigerian, Elvis Nosakhare, was jailed for six years in the UK for sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s underage daughter.
According to Gloucestershire Police, the offences took place in 2022 after Ogundipe met the victim at her workplace and invited her out for drinks. During the evening, his remarks became increasingly sexual, making her uncomfortable.
He later drove her to his home under the pretext of collecting something.
After she used the bathroom, Ogundipe sexually assaulted and raped her. Even as he drove her to Cheltenham afterwards, he continued to touch her against her will.
Police officers on routine patrol stopped Ogundipe’s car, giving the victim an opportunity to get out. Initially reluctant to speak, she confided in officers after they noticed her distress, revealing she had been raped.
Ogundipe claimed in court that the woman had consented, but the jury rejected his account.
Judge Lowe acknowledged the positive character references presented in Ogundipe’s favour but said the severity of the crime justified the five-year sentence.
In a statement read in court, the survivor described the devastating emotional toll of the assault, saying it made her question her worth and forced her to leave her job.
She encouraged other victims to speak out regardless of feelings of shame or self-blame.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Jon Furse praised her bravery, noting that Ogundipe’s actions had caused lasting harm.
He reaffirmed police commitment to holding sexual offenders accountable.
