THE Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed it is monitoring a recent media report alleging the involvement of the wife of Senator Sunday Marshall Katung in a money laundering case in the United Kingdom.
The report, published by an online news platform on June 10, alleged that Mrs. Abigail Katung, who currently serves as the Lord Mayor of Leeds, was implicated in financial misconduct linked to a known offender in the UK.
Responding to the development, the Media Office of Senator Katung issued a statement on Thursday refuting the claims, describing the report as “sensational” and “misleading.”
“The attention of the media office of Distinguished Senator Sunday Marshall Katung has been drawn to a media report captioned: ‘Exclusive: Wife of Nigerian Senator in money laundering mess in UK,’” said Midat Joseph, Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the senator.
Joseph emphasized that the judgment referenced in the media report was based on a civil proceeding, not a criminal one, and made no mention of money laundering.
Quoting directly from the UK judgment, Joseph noted: “The Judge shielded Mrs Katung from having any knowledge of Mr. Hussain’s criminal activities. I therefore make it crystal clear that I do not find that she was cognisant of what Mr. Hussain was up to.”
He added that the senator and his wife “have always conducted their affairs lawfully and transparently” and are prepared to take legal action against what they described as a defamatory narrative.
The Kaduna State Police Command, in a brief comment to reporters on Thursday evening, acknowledged awareness of the media report and said it had begun a preliminary review of its contents.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP Mansir Hassan stated: “We are aware of the circulating report involving a Nigerian public official and an ongoing legal matter in the UK. While no formal complaint has been filed at this time, the Command is monitoring the situation and is in contact with relevant agencies as necessary.”
As of the time of filing this report, no formal criminal investigation has been initiated by Nigerian authorities, and the UK case remains under appeal.
