NIGERIA captain, Wilfred Ndidi, has lost his father, Sunday Ndidi.
News Point Nigeria Sport reports that Sunday Ndidi died in a road accident around the Umunede area of Delta State on Tuesday.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,” Besiktas, the Turkish club where the Nigerian international plays, wrote on their X handle.
“May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”
Meanwhile, Ndidi has recalled his last moments with his father before his death.
“Eeraq you call me this morning with excitement in your voice but deep down na goodbye you dey tell me … What about things we talked about, so we no go talk again Na only memories?” he posted on his Instagram story.
The Super Eagle, who was part of Nigeria’s team at the just-concluded 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), recalled his goal celebration after scoring his first-ever goal for Nigeria in a 3-2 win over Tunisia.
“Even when I score my first national team goal I do that Papilo [Kanu Nwankwo] dance for you, but you just go like that EERAQ,” the midfielder said.
The Super Eagles have also extended their condolences to the player, praying for Ndidi and his family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time, Wilfred,” the post read.
