NIGERIA’s home-based Super Eagles began their campaign at the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a 1-0 loss to defending champions Senegal in Zanzibar on Tuesday.
The decisive goal came with 15 minutes remaining at the Amaan Stadium, after a moment of confusion at the back allowed the Senegalese to score with their only shot on target.
Goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha had been drawn off his line during the build-up, enabling the Lions of Teranga to take the lead.
The match, played at high intensity, saw both sides closely matched in pace and physicality.
Nigeria controlled possession for long periods but struggled to break down a disciplined Senegalese defence.
Mustapha made an early save in the 21st minute, dealing with a cross from the left, while Senegal came close again in the 33rd minute from a set piece.
Despite sustained pressure, Nigeria were unable to create clear chances.
Leonard Ngenge and captain Junior Nduka held firm in defence, while Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo worked to drive play through the midfield.
Senegal, however, successfully crowded out attacking efforts and denied Nigeria any clear path to goal.
Senegal nearly doubled their lead in the closing stages, but a combination of Ngenge and Nduka cleared the danger.
The result places Nigeria at the bottom of Group D with no points, following a 1-1 draw earlier in the day between Congo and Sudan.
Nigeria will play their second group match against Sudan at the same venue next Tuesday.
