The Dangerous Price Of Chasing Soft Life – By Boma West

    By Boma WestJuly 22, 2026
    Boma

THE phrase “soft life” has become one of the most popular expressions on social media. Every day, young Nigerians scroll through pictures of expensive vacations, luxury cars, designer clothes and exotic restaurants. Everything looks perfect. Everyone seems to be living their best life. Reality is often very different.

    ABDULSAMAD

Many people have started believing that success must look expensive. A simple life is now seen as failure. Contentment has quietly lost its place. Pressure has taken over.

    Senator Shekarau

Young men now feel they must own the latest car before anyone will respect them. Young women feel they must wear costly fashion brands to fit into certain circles. Some people borrow money just to celebrate birthdays or attend weddings in grand style. Others spend months paying back debts for just one weekend of enjoyment.

    NEW UBA

Social media only shows the beautiful side of life. It rarely shows unpaid loans, family struggles or sleepless nights. Many of those living the so called soft life are also dealing with problems nobody sees. Comparing real life with carefully edited pictures is a dangerous habit.

    Ad 20

This pressure is pushing many young Nigerians into bad decisions. Internet fraud, illegal businesses and financial scams continue to attract some people because they want quick money. Honest work is beginning to look too slow. Patience is becoming unpopular. Hard work is losing its appeal because social media celebrates results without asking how they were achieved.

Mental health is also paying the price. Many people now measure their worth by the number of likes, comments and followers they receive. A phone screen has become the judge of happiness. Confidence rises when posts go viral and disappears when they do not. That is a dangerous way to live.

Parents also have a role to play. Children should be taught that success is built over time. Schools should continue to promote values such as honesty, discipline and integrity. Religious and community leaders should remind young people that wealth without character is an empty achievement.

Social media itself is not the enemy. It has created opportunities for learning, business and creativity. The problem begins when people stop seeing it as entertainment and start treating it as the standard for real life.

Nigeria already faces enough economic challenges. Adding unnecessary pressure to impress strangers online only makes life more difficult. Peace of mind is worth more than expensive clothes bought with borrowed money. A clear conscience is more valuable than luxury funded by dishonest means.

Nigerian TAX Reform - Federal Goverment

Every generation has its own trend. The soft life culture should not become another trap that steals the dreams of hardworking young Nigerians. Real success is not measured by what people post online. It is measured by honest effort, personal growth and the ability to sleep peacefully at night.

Life is not a competition for applause from strangers. The richest person is not always the happiest. The happiest person is often the one who lives within their means, stays true to their values and refuses to let social media define their worth.
