PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has nominated Louis Odion and Ummasalma Isiyaku Rabiu as Executive Commissioners of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), in what the presidency describes as a strategic move to strengthen the country’s consumer rights watchdog.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Odion has been nominated as Executive Commissioner, Operations, while Umma Salma Rabiu is to serve as Executive Commissioner, Corporate Services.
Their appointments are subject to confirmation by the Senate in line with the provisions of the FCCPC Act, 2018.
Hailing from Edo State, Odion is a respected journalist and media strategist who previously served as Senior Technical Assistant on Media to then Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
He also held the position of Commissioner for Information in Edo State, where he was known for his communication reforms and public engagement strategies.
Odion holds two Master’s degrees, Modern War Studies from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom, and International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos.
His appointment is expected to bring a blend of media expertise, policy insight, and operational acumen to the FCCPC’s leadership.
At 35, Ummasalma Isiyaku Rabiu from Kano State represents a younger generation of public leaders.
She is the founder of the Usir Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering underprivileged individuals and communities through education, skills development, and humanitarian work.
A graduate of Business Administration, Rabiu has built a reputation as a grassroots politician, championing inclusive governance and the political participation of women and young people.
Her corporate services portfolio at FCCPC is expected to benefit from her community-driven approach and advocacy skills.
The FCCPC is tasked with promoting fair competition, protecting consumer rights, and ensuring ethical market practices across Nigeria. With these nominations, the Tinubu administration aims to inject diverse expertise and fresh perspectives into the commission’s leadership.
The Senate’s confirmation process will determine when Odion and Rabiu officially assume their roles.
