THE University of Maiduguri is set to resume academic activities on Monday after it was shut down due to the devastating flood that rocked the city over a week ago.
The registrar of the institution Ahmad Lawan disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
“I write to inform all staff and students that the university. Management has approved the resumption of lectures and office duties with effect from Monday 23rd September 2024,” the statement read in part.
Academic activities are set to resume after the flood water has receded and the situation in the state has improved.
Lawan added: “This followed the improvement in the situation in Maiduguri and its environs as well as the rehabilitation and re-opening of the major access roads to the University.”
Recall that the institution on Tuesday, September 10, suspended academic activities as well as temporary closure of offices due to the flood.
Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, experienced its worst flood in 30 years after the Alau Dam ruptured on September 10.
The Alau Dam which is located in the Jere Local Government Area, some 20km away from the metropolis, broke out in the early hours of September 10 causing flooding along the riverine areas, including major roads, zoos, schools, hospitals and other public facilities.
While the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council (UNHCR) and residents of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) described the flood as the city’s worst experience when compared to the flood that swept the city in 1994, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) described it as an unprecedented occurrence.
