BAYELSA State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has declared that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken in the collective interest of the state, insisting that political alignment with the Federal Government is necessary for Bayelsa’s progress.
News Point Nigeria reports that Diri stated this on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, marking the first time he publicly addressed his resignation from the PDP since October 15, 2025.
The governor is expected to be formally received into the APC today (Monday) in what political analysts describe as a major shift in the state’s political landscape.
Speaking to a large audience comprising political leaders, clerics, traditional rulers, and top dignitaries, Diri said his move was motivated by the need to secure stronger federal support for development.
“Somebody had to take the decision, and I took it on behalf of the state, in the best interest of Bayelsa. Some of you might not understand now, but later it will be clear to all.”
He expressed satisfaction with the cross-party participation at the Thanksgiving ceremony, noting that it symbolised maturity, unity, and peace in the state.
Highlighting his administration’s achievements, Diri said: “When we came in as a government, we ensured that most uncompleted projects were completed and new ones were initiated. That alone is enough reason to thank God.”
“Politics should be for development, not to destroy your brother. The gathering here is a testimony to the unity in our state.”
Political leaders who spoke at the event expressed strong support for Diri’s move.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by his Senior Policy Adviser, Funkekeme Solomon, urged Bayelsans to remain united and sustain the state’s development drive.
Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, described Diri as a unifier whose decision was timely and strategic.
“Bayelsa cannot afford to remain in opposition when key developmental decisions are being taken at the centre,” Lokpobiri said.
Managing Director, NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, praised Diri’s performance, calling him “a godsend to Bayelsa” and prayed for God’s continued guidance.
Delivering a sermon titled “Reasons Why We Should Thank God,” the General Overseer of TREM, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, said thanksgiving was key to breakthroughs and urged Bayelsans to embrace unity and faith.
Other dignitaries also gave goodwill messages, commending the governor’s leadership and calling for continued peace in the state.
