Why Mohamed Salah Snubs Saudi Riches, Signs New Liverpool Contract

    By EditorApril 12, 2025

EGYPTIAN forward Mohamed Salah has signed a new two-year contract extension with Liverpool, ending long-running speculation about a potential switch to the Saudi Pro League.

While the club did not disclose the contract’s exact duration, it is understood the new deal will keep Salah at Anfield until 2027. His previous agreement was due to expire this summer, raising concerns about his future following ambiguous statements and interest from Saudi clubs.

A decade of excellence at Anfield
With this extension, Salah is poised to complete a decade with the Reds, having joined from AS Roma in 2017. Over eight years, the 32-year-old has cemented his legendary status with 243 goals and 109 assists in 393 appearances.

In a statement, Liverpool announced, “Liverpool FC can announce Mohamed Salah has signed a new contract that will keep him with the club beyond the 2024-25 season.”

Salah has been at the heart of Liverpool’s charge for a record-equalling 20th top-flight title this season, netting 32 goals across all competitions — including 27 in the Premier League — and delivering 22 assists. Arne Slot’s side currently leads the table by 11 points with seven matches remaining.

Despite being heavily courted by Saudi clubs with a lucrative offer, Salah chose to stay, citing ambition and love for the club.

“Of course, I’m very excited. We have a great team now. Before, we also had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football,” Salah said.

“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played for eight years; hopefully, it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.”

“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us, and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully, in the future, we’re going to win more trophies.”

Earlier in the season, Salah had sparked concern among fans after saying he was “more out than in,” a quote Liverpool cleverly flipped in their social media announcement of his contract renewal with the caption: “More in than out.”

Salah’s glittering Liverpool career includes winning the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. He is one of three senior players who were nearing the end of their contracts, alongside Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While Van Dijk has confirmed progress in contract talks, Alexander-Arnold continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid.
