2027: Obi Meets Obasanjo Days After Atiku’s Claims Against Ex-President

FORMER Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Wednesday met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo amid renewed political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.

News Point Nigeria reports that the meeting was disclosed by Obi’s campaign photographer, Esther Umoh, who shared photographs of the two political figures on her X (formerly Twitter) account. However, she did not reveal the venue of the meeting or the issues discussed.

Confirming the development, Umoh wrote: “Earlier today, the presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, met with former president Olusegun Obasanjo.”

The meeting comes amid increasing political activities and consultations ahead of the 2027 general election, with key political actors engaging in strategic discussions.

It also comes just days after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accused Obasanjo of fabricating allegations against him in a bid to favour his kinsman ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Although Atiku did not mention the individual by name, President Bola Tinubu, who is seeking re-election in 2027, is of Yoruba extraction, the same ethnic group as Obasanjo.

On January 23, Obasanjo alleged that Atiku gave the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, N5 million to initiate impeachment proceedings against him during his first term in office as President.

The allegation triggered a war of words between the two elder statesmen, with both camps exchanging claims and counterclaims over the controversial accusation.

Wednesday’s meeting between Obi and Obasanjo is expected to further fuel political interest as consultations and alignments ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.
