THE Senate has called for the removal of the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, following what lawmakers described as his repeated failure to honour invitations to appear before the upper chamber.
News Point Nigeria reports that the resolution was adopted during a tense session of the Senate Committee on Finance, shortly after members of the President’s economic team appeared for an engagement with lawmakers.
Proceedings began on a visibly strained note as heads of government agencies were introduced at the start of the session. Lawmakers quickly voiced displeasure at the absence of the CAC Registrar-General, who had been invited to provide explanations regarding the commission’s activities and address unresolved financial matters.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu moved a motion demanding the immediate removal of the CAC boss, accusing him of persistently refusing to honour invitations extended by the Senate Committee on Finance.
“Since I came to the Senate, he has always given excuses that he is in the Villa,” Kalu said, expressing frustration over what he described as a pattern of disregard for legislative oversight.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa, also raised concerns over outstanding issues relating to the reconciliation of the commission’s revenues.
According to Musa, the CAC leadership had repeatedly failed to appear before the committee to clarify discrepancies and provide detailed accounts of its financial operations.
Lawmakers stressed that the commission, as a key revenue-generating agency of the Federal Government, must remain accountable and transparent in its dealings, particularly amid ongoing efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline and revenue mobilization.
Backing the motion for removal, Senator Adams Oshiomhole proposed that the Senate consider additional measures, including withholding approval of the CAC’s 2026 budget until the agency complies fully with legislative directives.
Oshiomhole argued that approving the budget of an agency whose leadership consistently avoids oversight would undermine the authority of the National Assembly and weaken institutional accountability.
The proposal added weight to the growing consensus within the chamber that firmer action was necessary.
Following deliberations, the Senate adopted the motion requesting that the President remove the CAC Registrar-General from office.
The resolution marks a significant escalation in tensions between the legislature and the leadership of the corporate regulatory body.
Lawmakers reiterated that invitations extended by the National Assembly are not optional but form part of the constitutional oversight responsibilities of the legislature.
They maintained that no public office holder is above accountability and warned that continued non-compliance with legislative summons would attract appropriate sanctions.
