THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has hosted some officials of Sierra Leone’s ministry of education to understudy Nigeria’s centralised admission system.
The visiting officials are learning to understand and establish a body similar to JAMB, which would streamline Sierra Leone’s admission process.
An X post on Sunday by Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, said the delegation includes Sarjoh Aziz Kamara, Sierra Leone’s deputy minister of education, Edwin Momoh, vice-chancellor of Ernest Bai Koroma university of science and technology, and Bashiru Koroma, vice-chancellor of Njala university.
Benjamin said that the delegation was taken through the examination and admission processes at the board’s headquarters in Bwari on Sunday.
He added that the delegation would also observe JAMB’s Monday policy meeting, which brings together key stakeholders in the admission value chain.
“During tomorrow’s Policy Meeting, they will also witness firsthand how critical stakeholders are actively carried along in the admission value chain,” the statement reads.
“The Sierra Leonean delegation expressed profound appreciation to the Board, noting that the increasing admission population in their country has posed serious challenges and that the Nigerian model offers practical solutions to issues they had long sought to address.
“Indeed, one can only imagine what Nigeria’s admission system would have looked like without JAMB. Those clamouring for the scrapping of the Board may better appreciate its strategic importance should such a situation ever arise.”
The meeting, scheduled to take place in Abuja, would feature the unveiling of key policy directions by Tunji Alausa, minister of education
Attendees at the meeting will include vice-chancellors, rectors, provosts, registrars, and admission officers across tertiary institutions.
Others are representatives of regulatory agencies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
