COUNCILLORS elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have threatened to review their loyalty and support for the ruling party if the Federal Government fails to halt what they described as baseless allegations, intimidation and media blackmail against Senator Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar, the Marafan Sokoto.
News Point Nigeria reports that the position was contained in a resolution adopted at the Nigeria Progressive Councillors Forum (NPCF) North-West Zonal Quarterly Meeting held in Kano under the leadership of its National President, Hon. Muslihu Yusuf Ali.
In the resolution, the forum, which said it represents 10,378 APC councillors nationwide, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct all federal anti-corruption and security agencies to immediately discontinue action on what it described as spurious and politically motivated petitions targeting Senator Yari.
The statement, which was copied to President Tinubu, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Executive Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the APC National Chairman, also condemned what it termed a coordinated smear campaign against the former Zamfara State governor.
The forum specifically rejected media reports and narratives linking Senator Yari to the June 11, 2026, seizure of ₦4.4 billion worth of raw gold at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
According to the councillors, the EFCC had publicly identified the actual suspects involved in the case, insisting that none of them was linked to Senator Yari.
They also dismissed allegations claiming that the senator was funding anti-government protests or sponsoring the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing such claims as false.
The councillors further stated that Senator Yari served creditably as Governor of Zamfara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, adding that he currently represents Zamfara West Senatorial District and has no corruption or criminal case pending against him in any court.
According to the forum, Yari’s administration introduced Zamfara State’s first Amnesty and Dialogue Programme, constructed a modern airport, executed extensive road projects, established tertiary institutions, founded the state’s first university in Gusau and attracted unprecedented foreign direct investment.
The NPCF also condemned what it described as the actions of “frustrated and confused political actors” from the North-West who allegedly lost governorship tickets and were now using sensitive national positions to intimidate and blackmail Senator Yari.
It argued that such actions were detrimental to party unity and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The forum also urged the Zamfara State Government and other individuals claiming APC affiliation while allegedly working against party stakeholders to retrace their steps.
Reaffirming its commitment to President Tinubu’s administration, the councillors nevertheless warned that they would reconsider their support structures if the alleged campaign against Yari was not halted.
“NPCF reaffirms full commitment to the Renewed Hope Administration. However, we state unequivocally that if government fails to halt these baseless allegations, weaponised intimidation, and media blackmail against Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, we will review our party loyalty and support structures. We will not allow a foundational stakeholder of Renewed Hope to be victimised by those masquerading as supporters,” the resolution stated.
