SEVEN persons have been confirmed dead and about a dozen others hospitalised following a suspected cholera outbreak in Kanye Village of Kabo Local Government Area of Kano State.

The death from the outbreak, this newspaper learnt, is believed to be after drinking water from a polluted open well in the area by the people.

The well was said to be contaminated following heavy downpours that busted a nearby pond, which overwhelmed the well that has been the only water source for the community.

It was gathered that the villagers started noticing that some people who used water from the well had fallen sick.

Hafiz Ali Baba, chief sanitation officer in the area who confirmed the cholera outbreak, noted that they have already directed the residents to stop using water from the suspected well.

“When we arrived at the village, already four people had died and were buried, while many others had fallen sick. We ordered that all the sick persons at home be conveyed to the hospital for medical attention,” he said.

Many people have died as a result of cholera outbreak in Kano in recent times, where health officials confirmed that of the more than 600 people affected, over 30 are feared dead.

The state’s Ministry of Health also believed the outbreak followed the heavy floods that occurred in some parts of the state which poured into wells.

It however assured that the wells have already been disinfected.

Malam Bashir, a resident of the village, appealed to the authorities to provide boreholes in the village.
