MINISTER of Defence, Christopher Musa, has summoned the country’s top military commanders for an emergency meeting following a series of deadly attacks on military bases in the North-East region.
News Point Nigeria reports that the high-level security meeting, held at the **Ministry of Defence Nigeria headquarters in Abuja, brought together key members of the military high command to review the nation’s counter-terrorism strategies amid rising insurgent activities.
The meeting comes in the wake of recent attacks by terrorists in Borno State, which reportedly claimed the lives of several soldiers, including three commanding officers.
Among those present at the meeting were the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu.
Also attending were the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass.
Representatives of the National Intelligence Agency and other security officials were also present at the strategic meeting.
The emergency meeting follows reports that terrorists recently launched coordinated assaults on military positions in Borno State.
Security sources disclosed that at least three Commanding Officers holding the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel were killed during the attacks.
Apart from the senior officers, several soldiers also lost their lives in the clashes with insurgents.
The attacks reportedly extended beyond military targets, with hundreds of civilians said to have been abducted by the terrorists and taken into captivity.
Speaking briefly before the meeting went into a closed-door session, the Defence Minister said the gathering was convened to reassess Nigeria’s military strategy in the ongoing war against terrorism.
According to him, the military leadership had agreed on the need to review operational strategies to strengthen ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.
“We know we have recorded some casualties, but it is more on the side of the terrorists,” Musa said.
He expressed confidence that the armed forces would continue to intensify their operations to neutralise insurgent groups and restore peace to affected communities.
Sources in the Defence Ministry told News Point Nigeria that meeting is expected to evaluate recent security developments in the North-East and identify new operational approaches to counter terrorist threats in the region.
