FORMER Borno State Governor and ex–National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has debunked a viral publication alleging that he accused Vice President Kashim Shettima of creating the Boko Haram insurgent group.
The widely circulated article, bearing the headline “It’s Not Me, It’s Shettima Who Created Boko Haram – Sheriff Reveals”, claimed that the former governor made damaging comments linking Shettima to the genesis of the deadly extremist organization.
But in a statement sent to News Point Nigeria, Sheriff dismissed the report as “false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to mislead Nigerians and destroy his reputation.”
“The said story is a total falsehood, devoid of truth, and a deliberate attempt to sow discord within the nation’s political landscape.”
Sheriff stressed that he never granted any interview nor made any statement even remotely related to the claims in circulation.
The influential politician condemned what he described as “a dangerous piece of fake news” crafted to create political tension and undermine his long-standing contributions to peace, unity, and development in Borno State and Nigeria at large.
He further disclosed that his legal team has been instructed to track down and prosecute the individuals behind the wrongful publication.
“Should the publication not be retracted and taken down forthwith, the Senator will not hesitate to seek full legal redress,” the statement warned.
Sheriff called on the public and media platforms to disregard the viral story and remain vigilant against misinformation aimed at causing national instability.
He reaffirmed his focus on promoting national unity, truth, and accountability, while urging responsible reporting and ethical journalism in the country’s political space.
