FORMER Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been released from detention and has returned home to participate in the burial rites of his late mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.
A source in the ICPC told News Point Nigeria that El-Rufai was released around 8pm on Friday and was escorted to his home by security operatives.
According to the source, “There was a presidential order for the immediate release of El-Rufai, which was promptly obeyed by the ICPC and security operatives.
“A few security operatives will also be present during his mother’s burial, although there is no clear indication of when he will return to detention. Perhaps the court may grant him bail by March 31 when he returns to court,” the source added.
The confirmation of his release was made by his son, Bashir El-Rufai, who disclosed the development via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
In the post, Bashir described his father’s detention as “unlawful and illegal,” strongly criticising the agency responsible, which he accused of misconduct.
“Thank you all for all the support. Our family shall never forget these times. We have overcome, as the El-Rufais always do,” he wrote, expressing gratitude to supporters.
El-Rufai’s release comes at a deeply emotional moment for the family, following the death of his mother, who reportedly passed away in Cairo, Egypt, after a brief illness.
His return home to attend the burial has sparked sympathy from political allies, associates, and members of the public, many of whom have taken to social media to offer condolences.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also extended his condolences to El-Rufai and his family over the loss.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late matriarch as a woman of remarkable character who raised children and grandchildren that have contributed significantly to national development.
“Nasir, please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your beloved mother… Losing a mother is a pain unlike any other. I pray that the memories of her love, wisdom, and guidance bring you comfort in the days ahead,” the statement read.
The President also prayed for the repose of her soul, asking Allah to grant her Aljannatul Firdaus.
While El-Rufai has yet to personally comment on his release or his mother’s passing, his family has continued to acknowledge the outpouring of support from Nigerians.
