GOVERNOR Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved the constitution of an administrative investigative committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano.
News Point Nigeria reports that the development was contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawaki-Tofa.
The committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Makoda, and is composed of key stakeholders drawn from the education, legal, media, and private school sectors, alongside representatives of the school and parents’ association.
Members include Aminu Hussain, Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters; Hamza Dantani; Abubakar Umar, Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board; Sunusi Dawaki-Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity; Ahmed Zubairu, representative of proprietors of private schools; and the PTA chairman of St. Louis College. Hafsat Adhama, Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Education, will serve as secretary, while Mrs Binta Mukhtar, Under Secretary/REPA, will act as assistant secretary.
The committee has been tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the incident, establishing a clear timeline of events, and identifying any lapses in supervision, welfare management, or institutional procedures that may have contributed to the tragedy.
According to Dawaki-Tofa, the committee’s terms of reference include reviewing the events leading to the student’s death, examining medical records and official reports, and investigating the social environment within the college.
It is also mandated to assess allegations of bullying, coercion, or unauthorised disciplinary practices, while evaluating existing complaints and reporting mechanisms within the institution.
Beyond fact-finding, the panel will review staff compliance with supervision guidelines and recommend reforms aimed at improving disciplinary systems and boarding school management structures across the state.
The committee is further expected to propose measures to strengthen emergency medical response systems and enhance student safety standards in schools throughout Kano State.
Governor Yusuf said his administration remains committed to uncovering the truth behind the incident and ensuring that such a tragedy does not occur again in the future.
He directed the committee to carry out its assignment with fairness, diligence, and professionalism, and to submit its findings and recommendations within the stipulated timeframe.
Meanwhile, parallel investigations are also underway, as the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori, has constituted a special investigative panel to examine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The police probe follows a formal petition submitted by Nakudu Law Partners, solicitors to the mother of the deceased student, Mrs Nusaiba Rabi’u Dan Sheriff, concerning the death of her daughter, identified as Maimuna Sani Salisu, a JSS 2 boarding student of St. Louis Secondary School, Kano.
