A KANO State High Court has arraigned a man, Ali Sulaiman Adam of Gadon Kaya, over the alleged murder of his wife, Maryam Nababa Badamasi, in a case that has attracted public attention in the state.
News Point Nigeria reports that Adam was brought before Kano State High Court No. 15, where the state government filed a two-count charge against him bordering on culpable homicide and arson over the incident.
According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly killed his wife and set the room where the incident occurred on fire in an attempt to conceal the alleged crime.
During the court proceedings, the charges were read to Adam, but he pleaded not guilty to both counts.
The prosecution counsel, Barrister Lamido Abba Sorondinki, subsequently urged the court to grant an adjournment to allow the state prepare and present its witnesses for trial.
However, counsel to the defendant, Barrister A. A. Dabo, appealed to the court to uphold the bail previously granted to his client by the Gezawa Division of the Kano State High Court.
The defence counsel’s request was not immediately granted by the trial court, leading him to seek permission to file a fresh application for bail.
Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of Kano State High Court No. 15 thereafter adjourned the matter until July 27, when the court is expected to hear the defendant’s fresh bail application.
The case has continued to draw attention in Kano as the court prepares to commence full proceedings on the allegations against Adam.
