FORMER Anambra State Governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, on Sunday paid a high-profile courtesy visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.
News Point Nigeria reports that Obi, who was accompanied by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement, and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV), Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, said the visit was aimed at discussing the state of the nation, national unity, and pathways toward a more just and equitable Nigeria.
Posting photos from the meeting on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi said: “Today, I, with Dr. @YunusaTanko, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour @GRVlagos, and Segun Adebanjo visited President Obasanjo on a courtesy visit. Thereafter, we visited the new Olubadan of Ibadan, Kabiyesi Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja.
In both visits, we were fortunate to discuss the state of our nation and how all of us can live in unity, love, fairness and justice progressively together. The meetings make me believe that coming together of a competent team with capacity, compassion, and commitment to build a new Nigeria is POssible.”
Sources close to the meeting hinted that the discussions touched on critical national issues, including Nigeria’s economic reforms, growing insecurity, youth unemployment, and the need to strengthen democratic institutions ahead of future elections.
Obasanjo, known for his outspoken stance on governance and reform, has in recent times been vocal about the need for leadership that unites Nigerians across ethnic and religious divides, making Sunday’s engagement particularly symbolic.
Following the Abeokuta engagement, Obi and his team proceeded to Ibadan, Oyo State, where they visited the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, to pay homage and discuss ways to foster peace and development in the South-West and across Nigeria.
The meeting was described as warm and cordial, with both sides emphasising the need for inter-ethnic harmony, justice, and fairness in governance.
Though described as a “courtesy visit,” a source told News Point Nigeria that Obi’s recent engagements with elder statesmen and traditional leaders signal that he is consolidating his network and political relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
