GOVERNORS elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to meet in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, today (Monday) in a high-stakes meeting aimed at addressing key issues threatening the unity and future of the opposition party.
Credible sources told The PUNCH on Sunday that the emergency meeting, convened under the PDP Governors’ Forum, will address the controversy surrounding the reinstatement of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court, in a ruling delivered on March 21, 2025, invalidated previous lower court decisions that briefly installed Sunday Udeh-Okoye in the position.
Although the PDP had earlier aligned with Udeh-Okoye, it has yet to make a formal statement following the apex court’s decision that reinstated Anyanwu, who is widely known as a close ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The PDP governors will also discuss the political turbulence in Rivers State, particularly the controversial suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who also serves as the party’s Vice Chairman.
Fubara’s suspension followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, escalating the already tense political climate in the oil-rich state.
The governors are expected to deliberate on the implications of the development for the party and its leadership.
Also on the agenda is the role of former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who has recently been championing a proposed merger of opposition parties in a bid to form a stronger front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governors are expected to assess the feasibility of the merger and its potential impact on the PDP’s structure and electoral prospects.
The governors are also expected to discuss broader strategies for party reconciliation, internal cohesion, and preparation for the upcoming elections.
The Ibadan meeting is seen as a crucial turning point for the PDP, as it seeks to navigate internal rivalries, legal entanglements, and mounting external pressures in the lead-up to 2027.
