PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s military operations following the brutal attack in Darajamal, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, where scores of civilians and soldiers were killed by Boko Haram insurgents.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, in a statement issued on Monday through his spokesman Stanley Nkwocha made available to News Point Nigeria, conveyed the President’s directive to the Armed Forces. The order includes intensified deployment of advanced military hardware, drones, and surveillance equipment to crush terrorist groups across the country.
Shettima, a former governor of Borno State, also extended heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the victims’ families, and the Nigerian military over the tragic incident that has thrown the nation into mourning.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno State, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots. These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families,” the Vice President said.
Governor Zulum had on Saturday visited Darajamal to commiserate with survivors and families of the deceased. The attack, which occurred on Friday night, left behind scenes of devastation, sparking renewed calls for decisive action against insurgents who continue to terrorize rural communities.
Shettima stressed that the Tinubu administration remains fully committed to defeating terrorism. He revealed that President Tinubu has already approved the acquisition of additional drones and advanced surveillance systems to boost counterinsurgency efforts.
In addition, the President has directed all security agencies to review their operational strategies to plug gaps that insurgents exploit and to ensure more proactive responses in volatile regions.
The Vice President further hinted at the Federal Government’s ongoing consideration of establishing state police as part of broader security reforms. According to him, President Tinubu believes that certain security challenges require localized units that understand the terrain, culture, and peculiarities of communities they are meant to protect.
“The President has been clear: state policing is on the table. Security at the grassroots requires specialized units that know the local terrain and can respond swiftly to threats,” Shettima noted.ice
While assuring Borno people of the Federal Government’s continued support, Shettima expressed confidence in the Armed Forces’ capacity to overcome the challenges.
He called for unity and resilience in the face of grief, stressing that the sacrifices of both civilians and soldiers would not be in vain.
The Darajamal massacre is the latest in a string of attacks that highlight the persistence of insurgent violence in Nigeria’s North-East, despite years of counterterrorism operations.
