PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday described the conduct of the 2026 primaries of the All Progressives Congress across the country as a strong demonstration of internal democracy within the ruling party.
News Point Nigeria reports that Tinubu made the remarks after participating in the APC Presidential Primaries at Ikoyi-Obalende Ward L2 in Lagos, where he said the exercise had further deepened the democratic process and strengthened grassroots participation in politics.
The President arrived at the venue alongside the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and was received by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, and former Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, alongside other party leaders.
President Tinubu commended APC members nationwide for what he described as their orderly conduct, enthusiasm, and commitment to democratic values throughout the primary election process.
“This is a demonstration of internal democracy, and it has been going on very well according to plan. This is grassroots politics where every member of the party has the right to participate,” the President said.
“It shows that we have internal democracy and it’s peaceful and well organised.”
Speaking further on the conduct of the primaries across different states, Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the way governors and party officials handled the process from the ward level to delegate accreditation and validation exercises.
“I am very satisfied that Governors have done well in their various states, from the ward congresses to Local Government congresses to the delegate accreditation, validation, membership registration and the certification of the electoral process. It has been done very well, and with this, you could rate democracy at a high level,” he stated.
The President reiterated that the APC remained committed to transparent and inclusive democratic processes that allow party members at the grassroots to freely choose their leaders and representatives.
According to him, grassroots participation remains the foundation for sustainable democratic development and political stability in the country.
Tinubu also praised electoral officials, party leaders and security agencies for ensuring that the primary elections were conducted peacefully and credibly across the federation.
He further urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and promoting national unity.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to democratic ideals, good governance and policies aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians while strengthening political stability nationwide.
