PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the nominations of Retired Admiral Jamila Abubakar as National Commissioner representing Adamawa State at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Ambassador Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
News Point Nigeria reports that the requests were conveyed in two separate letters addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read during plenary on Tuesday.
In his letter, President Tinubu said the nomination of Retired Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq for appointment as INEC National Commissioner was made in compliance with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The President stated that the appointment is for the position of National Commissioner representing Adamawa State at the electoral body.
“In compliance with the provisions of Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq (retd.) as Commissioner representing Adamawa State at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” the letter read.
Tinubu urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nominee expeditiously.
Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the request to the Senate Committee on INEC for further legislative consideration, directing it to report back to plenary within one week.
In a separate correspondence, President Tinubu also sought Senate confirmation for the appointment of Ambassador Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of NAHCON.
The President noted that the nomination was made in accordance with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026, which provides for Senate confirmation of the commission’s chairman.
“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the appointment expeditiously, please accept, Mr Senate President and distinguished Senators, the assurances of my highest regards,” Tinubu stated in the letter.
Akpabio subsequently referred the NAHCON nomination to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative input and directed that it return to plenary within one week.
The appointments, if confirmed, would fill critical leadership positions in two important national institutions.
INEC plays a central role in organizing and supervising elections across Nigeria, while NAHCON is responsible for regulating and supervising Hajj operations for Nigerian pilgrims.
The Senate committees are expected to conduct screening exercises for both nominees before presenting their reports for consideration and possible confirmation at plenary.
