IN December 2003, Karl Von Batten, the United States-based lobbyist hired by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, was convicted and sentenced over an assault against his girlfriend, according to court documents seen by News Point Nigeria.
The conviction arose from a July 2003 incident and was later referenced in a judgment of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
The context of Von Batten’s assault conviction was contained in the judgment of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in an appeal filed by Cynthia D. Murphy, the lobbyist’s ex-girlfriend. In the court document, Von Batten’s name was stated as “Karl M.E. Okeke.”
Murphy had filed an appeal against a civil protection order (CPO) issued for failing to leave Okeke’s apartment after he asked her to.
A civil protection order is a restraining order issued by the court, directing that one person stays away from another.
Murphy had told the US appellate court that the CPO was improper “because unlawful entry is a crime against property, not against a person and, therefore, does not satisfy the statutory requirement for an intrafamily offense”. The appellate court ultimately overturned the CPO issued against Murphy and ordered the lower court to vacate the order.
While delivering judgment on the appeal filed by Murphy, the US appellate court provided some background on the assault involving Von Batten.
According to the court, Murphy and Von Batten began a romantic relationship in April 2003.
Months later, Murphy and Von Batten’s relationship became frosty.
On July 4, 2003, Okeke invited Murphy to a party at his apartment where they consumed alcoholic beverages.
During the party, Murphy and Katy Elizabeth Gaire, the lobbyist’s roommate, entered the bathroom for a private chat.
“When Ms. Murphy told Ms. Gaire that she and Mr. Okeke were involved in a romantic relationship, Ms. Gaire said, ‘now that I know that, you need to know that within the past two weeks since I’ve moved in . . . I’ve slept with [Mr. Okeke] four or five times,’” part of the court documents reads.
“After receiving this news, Ms. Murphy became very emotional and began to cry and yell.”
As Murphy broke down in tears, Von Batten accessed the bathroom and the duo got into a heated argument.
Amid the altercation, Von Batten asked Murphy to get out of his house.
The court document stated that Von Batten lunged at his ex-girlfriend, who was perched on the edge of the bathtub, causing her to fall.
Murphy soon ran into Von Batten’s bedroom.
“Inside the bedroom, Mr. Okeke dragged Ms. Murphy by her legs and arms; repeatedly hit her in the face (including her eye); kicked her in her legs and on her buttocks; and pushed her up against the wall,” the US Court of Appeal said.
“While he was assaulting her, Mr. Okeke repeatedly asked her to leave. The attack left Ms. Murphy with a black eye, a swollen face, bruises extending from her lip down to the base of her neck as well as on the side of her face and arms, and cuts to the inside of her mouth.”
After the lobbyist left the bedroom, his ex-girlfriend locked the door and called 911.
According to the court document, Murphy climbed the bedroom window to the outside ledge of the first-floor apartment because she feared that the defendant would continue to assault her.
When neighbours saw Murphy on the ledge, they helped her alight.
Subsequently, the lobbyist’s ex-girlfriend went to the George Washington University Hospital for treatment over her injuries.
Owing to the assault, Okeke was sentenced to 180 days in jail on December 10, 2003.
“On December 10, 2003, following a misdemeanor bench trial, Mr. Okeke was sentenced to 180 days in jail for the July 4, 2003, assault against Ms. Murphy,” the US Court of Appeal said.
“The jail time was suspended, and Mr. Okeke was placed on one year of probation, with an order to stay away from Ms. Murphy, complete fifty hours of community service, participate in a domestic violence counseling program, and make a contribution to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund.”
The Cable cannot immediately confirm whether Von Batten appealed the judgment, with correspondence sent his way yet to be replied at the time of filing this report.
On the appeal filed by Murphy, the US Court overturned the lower court’s decision to issue a CPO against the lobbyist’s ex-girlfriend and ordered the lower court to vacate the order.
The judgment was delivered by Anna Blackburne-Rigsby, Stephen Glickman, and John Ferren, on July 3, 2008.
In April 2026, Atiku hired Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., a Washington-based lobbying firm, to protect and strengthen his “reputational standing” in the United States.
The outfit was founded by Von Batten.
A Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filing with the US Department of Justice showed that the lobbying contract amounted to $1,200,000 annually. The filing says the engagement was intended, among other things, to protect and strengthen Atiku’s reputational standing in Washington and counterbalance Nigerian government lobbying narratives.
Since the contract was signed, Von Batten’s background and records have come under intense public scrutiny.
His name has raised several questions bordering on his country of origin.
On Von Batten’s LinkedIn profile, his full name is listed as “Karl-Marx Edward Ikemefuna William George Okeke-Von Batten” — a mixbag of British, German/Austrian, and Nigerian names.
“Von” is a common prefix for surnames linked to nobility in Germany and Austria, while Ikemefuna Okeke suggests south-east Nigerian roots, and Batten is of British origin.
On the court documents, he was identified as “Karl M.E. Okeke”. The initials represent Marx and Edward. A development that means that the lobbyist later changed his surname to “Von Batten”.
Recent reporting has also noted that Von Batten appears under different name variations in US filings, including the name Karl-Marx Okeke-Von Batten in a 2022 filing, while the 2026 FARA filing for Atiku identifies him as Karl Von Batten.
Recently, the lobbying firm deleted an X post announcing the purported appointment of Von Batten to a White House position.
According to the firm, US President Donald Trump appointed Von Batten to serve as a commissioner on a White House presidential commission.
The firm, in the now-deleted post, described the purported appointment as a presidential appointment and said Von Batten was grateful to Trump for the confidence placed in him. However, the firm did not specify the commission involved.
There was no official communication from the White House confirming or denying the purported appointment of Von Batten.
