President Tinubu, who received the resignation earlier in the day, expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

The President commended the outgoing police chief for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023 and was serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in accordance with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Following the resignation, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

The President said the decision was taken in view of the current security challenges confronting the country and in line with extant laws and legal guidance.

Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity, noting that his appointment would provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during what he described as a critical period.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

Following deliberations by the Council, Disu’s name will be transmitted to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation, as required by law.

The presidency reiterated its commitment to strengthening national security and institutional capacity within the police force.
