Loyalty, Sacrifice, And Recognition: The A.A. Zaura Conversation – By Al-Amin Ciroma

‘Its a matter of loyalty, sacrifice, and the question of reward’

    NEW UBA

ONE of the fundamental aspects of politics, especially in Nigeria, is that loyalty is often praised but not always rewarded. Few figures embody this paradox more clearly than Alhaji Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, popularly known as A. A. Zaura, whose tireless commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to spark conversation within Kano State and beyond.

    NNAMDI

Since joining the APC in 2019, Zaura has distinguished himself as a steadfast party loyalist. At a time when the party faced significant turbulence, particularly following the departure of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who went on to strengthen the New Nigeria Peoples Party, A. A. Zaura remained resolute. While others recalibrated their allegiances, he doubled down on his support, working tirelessly to sustain the party’s relevance in Kano State.

His role during the administration of former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was particularly notable. With a blend of youthful energy, personal resources, and grassroots engagement, Zaura helped stabilise party morale during a critical period. His contributions were not merely symbolic; they were practical, financial, and deeply personal.

When the opportunity arose to contest for the governorship, many expected A. A. Zaura to pursue it vigorously. Yet, in a demonstration of party discipline and loyalty, he accepted the APC’s consensus decision and redirected his ambition toward the Kano Central Senatorial seat. It was a move that underscored his commitment to collective party interest over personal aspiration.

Even after the APC’s electoral setback in Kano during the 2023 general elections, largely influenced by the resurgence of Kwankwaso’s political base, Zaura did not retreat. Instead, he remained a unifying figure, encouraging members to rebuild, reconcile, and refocus. His efforts extended beyond Kano, contributing to the broader northern campaign that supported the eventual victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Notably, despite playing a visible role in the party’s mobilisation efforts, A. A. Zaura has maintained a dignified silence in the face of political exclusion. While others might have defected or expressed discontent, he chose patience and continued loyalty. This restraint has not gone unnoticed, attracting overtures from opposition figures, yet his allegiance to the APC has remained firm.

Recent political developments, including the evolving dynamics surrounding Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, further highlight Zaura’s relevance within Kano’s political structure. As the APC recalibrates its strategy in the state, questions are naturally arising about leadership choices and the future direction of the party.

One such question centres on the reported preference by some party stakeholders for former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau as the APC’s consensus candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial seat. Shekarau’s stature as an elder statesman is undeniable, and his experience commands respect.

However, this situation raises a broader and more pressing concern: when does consistent loyalty, sacrifice, and grassroots engagement translate into opportunity for emerging leaders like A. A. Zaura?

The APC, like any political institution, must continuously balance experience with renewal. Encouraging youthful, committed figures like Zaura is not merely a matter of reward; it is an investment in the party’s future. A system that overlooks such dedication risks discouraging the very energy and loyalty it seeks to cultivate.

As the party moves forward, this moment presents an opportunity for reflection. Recognising and empowering individuals who have stood firm through adversity could strengthen internal cohesion and inspire a new generation of committed members.

Ultimately, the conversation surrounding A. A. Zaura is not just about one individual; it is about the values the APC chooses to uphold and the message it sends to those who believe in perseverance, loyalty, and service.
