NATIONAL leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced the selection of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the Kano governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
News Point Nigeria reports that the former Kano State governor also unveiled Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna as the party’s candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.
Kwankwaso disclosed this in a statement issued through his official handle on Friday.
According to him, the decision followed extensive consultations within the party and was guided by the principles of equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence.
“I am delighted to announce that His Excellency, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has been selected as our Kano NDC gubernatorial candidate for the upcoming elections.
“Similarly, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial Seat.
“This decision was made in the spirit of equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence — values that remain central to our party and Kwankwasiyya’s progress and unity,” the statement read.
Kwankwaso also prayed for a peaceful and successful affirmation exercise, expressing optimism about the party’s chances in the elections.
“As we proceed with today’s affirmation exercise, I pray for a seamless, peaceful, and successful process. May Almighty Allah grant us resounding victory in the forthcoming elections,” he stated.
Gwarzo, a longtime ally of Kwankwaso, was the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He previously served as Commissioner for State Affairs during Kwankwaso’s administration and also held office as Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area.
Gwarzo resigned as Kano deputy governor after Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress before joining the African Democratic Congress alongside Kwankwaso and later moving to the NDC.
Meanwhile, Gawuna served as Deputy Governor of Kano State under Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
He was also the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 election.
Gawuna recently defected to align with Kwankwaso and the NDC ahead of the 2027 political contest.
