ALL access roads leading to the “A-Class” Event Centre in Abuja, the venue scheduled to host a proposed special convention for the ratification of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, have been barricaded by the police.
News Point Nigeria reports that the proposed convention was being organised by members of the party loyal to Tanimu Turaki.
Eyewitnesses said the police deployed several operational vans to completely block the two major access roads leading from the Wuse and Maitama axes into the premises of the event centre.
The blockade effectively denied access not only to PDP members loyal to Turaki but also to other road users who had no connection with the planned convention.
The development comes barely a day after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, warned hotels and event centres against allowing illegal political parties or organisations to use their facilities, citing security concerns within the FCT.
Reacting to the situation, the PDP accused Wike of attempting to frustrate its planned event.
In a statement issued by the party, the PDP alleged that the management of A-Class Event Centre had informed its officials that pressure was being mounted on the facility to prevent the gathering from taking place.
According to the party, it had already paid for the venue and fulfilled all the conditions required for hosting the programme.
The PDP also stated that security agencies had been duly notified of the convention, which was scheduled to hold on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Wuse 2, Abuja.
In the statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party disclosed that it had directed its legal team to remind the event centre of the subsisting agreement entered into with the PDP.
The opposition party maintained that the convention would proceed despite what it described as acts of intimidation.
“We are certain that Nigeria is a country governed by law, and any attempt to use force to suppress political dissent and opposition is an aberration which must be resisted by all people of good conscience,” the statement read.
