THE faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
News Point Nigeria reports that Jonathan’s candidacy was ratified on Saturday during a special national convention held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki District, Abuja.
Although the former president was not physically present at the convention venue, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi.
The Turaki-led faction had initially scheduled the convention to take place at the A-Class Park and Event Centre in Abuja.
However, the development followed a directive by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which instructed owners of hotels and event centres to engage only with leaderships of political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is the one recognised by the electoral commission.
In a related development, police officers on Saturday morning barricaded roads leading to the A-Class Park and Event Centre, effectively preventing access to the venue and forcing organisers to relocate the gathering.
Party officials later informed TheCable that the convention had been moved to another location in Area 10, where proceedings eventually took place.
The convention culminated in the ratification of Jonathan as the faction’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
News Point Nigeria further reports that a date for the formal presentation of the party’s flag to the former president will be announced at a later time.
