I VEHEMENTLY disagree with the notion that the omission of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s name during the endorsement at the APC North-East summit in Gombe was in conformity with party convention and constitutional provisions.
A meticulous examination of the Constitution, specifically Section 131, reveals that it solely addresses qualifications for contesting as a fresh candidate, not reelection, which is the pertinent issue at hand.
Globally, it is a well-established party convention that the two supposed candidates on each ticket for the executive arm elections are explicitly pronounced at each political gathering. This serves to instill a sense of belonging amongst supporters of these candidates.
The endorsement of Tinubu alongside Kashim does not also imply that conditions are being imposed on President Tinubu prior to endorsement.
However, I pose the question: what is the culpability in stipulating conditions for President Tinubu’s nomination and election for a second term? This is a ubiquitous practice globally. Would undecided voters take our party seriously if we give an elected representative a blank check?
Again, where and who decreed that party executives are solely responsible for nominating candidates for the party? What role do delegates (both statutory and elected) play in the nomination processes?
The events that transpired at the Gombe summit serve as a clarion call for the party to adopt a more inclusive approach henceforth and eschew any semblance of a demigod posture. It is imperative that the party recognizes and respects the rights and roles of all stakeholders, including delegates and supporters, in the nomination and election processes.
The party must ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to democratic principles to maintain the trust and confidence of its members and supporters. I caution the APC executives across all levels to be mindful of their actions and decisions, as they have far-reaching consequences for the party’s image and electoral fortunes.
It is also crucial that the party executives prioritize inclusivity, fairness, and transparency in all decision-making processes. The party must avoid actions that may be perceived as undemocratic, divisive, or detrimental to the interests of its members and supporters.
I advise the APC executives to engage in broad-based consultations and ensure that the views and interests of all stakeholders are taken into account. By doing so, the party can build trust, foster unity, and present a strong, united front in the upcoming elections.
Ultimately, the APC’s success depends on its ability to uphold democratic principles, promote inclusivity, and prioritize the interests of its members and supporters.
