BADAMASI S. Burji, GMD/CEO of First Class Refreshments Limited (FCR Food), has been named winner of The Sun Industrialist of the Year Award 2026 by The Sun Publishing Limited.
In a June 9, 2026 letter, The Sun’s Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, said the award recognizes Dr. Burji’s contributions to manufacturing, food processing, export development, job creation, and the promotion of indigenous industries. T
he company was praised for transforming traditional Nigerian products like kilishi, kuli-kuli, kunu, zobo, and 22 varieties of Ghal-Burj Golden Tea and Coffee into standardized brands that meet modern and international quality standards.
The Sun noted FCR Food’s role in moving indigenous foods from local markets to modern retail and export channels. Recent innovations include zip-pack products launched after the company received Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) certification from the Nigeria Customs Service. Under Dr. Burji’s leadership, FCR Food has expanded operations across the agricultural value chain, creating jobs for farmers, processors, marketers, and distributors.
Beyond business, Dr. Burji is recognized for supporting community development and humanitarian causes, reflecting a belief that business success must translate to societal impact.
Reacting to the award, Dr. Burji said he accepted “with deep appreciation and humility,” noting he never expected the recognition given the calibre of past winners and that no payment was made in the selection process. “This tells me the media is watching, and our work in promoting Made-in-Nigeria products to the global market is being noticed,” he said.
Dr. Burji said the timing is critical as FCR Food expands into the Middle East, Botswana, Europe, Asia, the UK, and the USA. The company recently signed an MOU with Silk United, a major promoter of Made-in-Saudi products, to support its export push.
He also credited SMEDAN, the Nigeria Customs Service, NEPC, NAFDAC, and Nexim Bank for backing FCR Food’s growth and export readiness. As Special Adviser to the NASSI President and a candidate for NASSI Chairman, FCT, Dr. Burji said the award validates his commitment to small-scale industrial development.
With the award ceremony set for November 13, 2026 in Lagos — two days before his November 15 birthday — Dr. Burji called it “double happiness” for him and his family. FCR Food received The Sun’s delegation at First Class Tower, Wuse 2, Abuja on June 10, 2026, when the Managing Director and his team presented the nomination letter on behalf of The Sun newspaper.
The Sun Industrialist of the Year Award honours entrepreneurs who have made tremendous contributions to manufacturing, value creation, employment, and Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
