THE Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening discipline, accountability, and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
News Point Nigeria reports that the development, announced on Monday, is intended to reposition the unit as a more effective internal oversight mechanism capable of addressing operational lapses and improving service delivery across the Force.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the restructuring was driven by the need to refocus the unit on its core mandate, tackle identified inefficiencies, and enhance its capacity for proactive monitoring and intelligence-led inspections.
Under the new framework, the Monitoring Unit has been streamlined and strengthened to provide real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across commands, formations, and departments nationwide.
The reorganisation also harmonises investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.
As part of the changes, the IGP approved the appointment of Aliyu Abubakar as the new head of the Police Monitoring Team, where he will oversee the operations of the restructured unit.
Before his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Police Commands.
He was actively involved in several high-profile investigations and worked with state authorities to modernise investigative processes and improve operational effectiveness.
He is widely regarded by colleagues and stakeholders as a professional and community-oriented officer known for promoting transparency and public engagement in policing.
The IGP noted that the restructuring is part of efforts to entrench professionalism, discipline, and transparency within the Force. He added that the Monitoring Unit would play a central role in identifying misconduct, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to sustained institutional reforms and the delivery of a more accountable, professional, and citizen-focused policing system.
