INEC Introduces QR Codes For PVC Collection, Announces New 2027 Election Dates

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos has introduced Quick Response (QR) codes to help eligible voters locate designated Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection centres ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the commission also announced revised dates for the polls following changes to the electoral legal framework.

News Point Nigeria reports that the QR codes will be available for scanning across the commission’s social media handles and official website, enabling voters to identify their designated collection centres more easily.

Speaking at a press conference at the commission’s headquarters in Lagos on Tuesday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Ayobami Salami, urged eligible voters to collect their PVCs, verify their registration details and rely on official information as INEC intensifies preparations for the elections.

Beyond voter services, the commission said preparations for the 2027 general elections were in top gear in Lagos State, with ongoing efforts to procure and test voter accreditation devices, improve election-result transmission systems, strengthen logistics, and recruit and train election personnel.

As part of preparations for the polls, INEC had approved and issued a revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.

The commission had initially fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections were scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2027, in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2022.

However, following the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced adjustments to statutory timelines governing pre-election and electoral activities, the commission reviewed and realigned the schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework.

Accordingly, INEC announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections would now hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections would take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027.

The revised timetable means voters and political stakeholders will need to adjust their preparations to reflect the new dates, while INEC continues its efforts to strengthen electoral logistics, technology and personnel ahead of the polls.

The introduction of QR codes for PVC collection is also expected to make it easier for eligible voters in Lagos to locate their designated collection centres and confirm their registration details before election day.
