KANO State has been thrown into mourning following a deadly attack in which a mother and her six children were brutally killed by hoodlums, in what residents have described as one of the most horrifying incidents in recent times.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed that seven people, including a 35-year-old woman, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children, were killed on Saturday during a violent invasion of their residence at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano metropolis.
According to the police, the assailants, whose identities are yet to be determined, forcefully gained access to the family’s home and attacked the occupants with dangerous weapons, inflicting fatal injuries on all seven victims.
Confirming the incident in a statement sent to News Point Nigeria, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano State, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the command received a distress call at about 12:10 pm on January 17, reporting an attack on the household of one Haruna Bashir.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, upon receiving the report, immediately mobilised a team of officers to the scene, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Lawal Mani,” Kiyawa said.
He added that the victims were rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where medical personnel confirmed that they were dead on arrival.
Following the incident, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, ACP Wada Jarma, was directed to commence a comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying and arresting those responsible for the attack.
The police command expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family, residents of Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters and the people of Kano State, while assuring the public that no effort would be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The tragedy comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in Kano, following a similar incident reported by this newspaper, in which a volunteer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdurrauf Sheriff, was allegedly stabbed to death by hoodlums in another part of the state.
The killing of the NSCDC volunteer has further heightened fears among residents, who say criminal attacks are becoming increasingly frequent and brazen.
