VISITNG golfers from the neighbouring Katsina Golf Club on Saturday defeated their hosts, Kano Golf Club 1908, in a keenly contested one-day friendly inter-club matchplay held at the Kano Golf Course, finishing with a score of 4½ to 2½.
News Point Nigeria Sport reports that the match featured a total of 36 golfers—18 from each club—paired in twos and competing across 18 holes each. The players, drawn from various handicap rankings (a numerical measure of a golfer’s demonstrated ability), delivered a competitive outing that reflected both skill and sportsmanship.
At the brief but impressive closing ceremony held at the Kano Golf Club House, the Captain of Kano Golf Club, Mr. David Emeana, described the encounter as a significant return of matchplay to Kano after a long absence, noting that it formed part of his administration’s broader agenda to uplift the game and promote unity in diversity.
He further disclosed plans to extend invitations to golf clubs from other geopolitical zones to participate in future inter-club matchplays hosted by Kano Golf Club.
According to Mr. Emeana, golf offers far more than sporting competition. Beyond the health benefits enjoyed by players, he said the game also helps to develop commerce, boost the economy, promote tourism, and strengthen unity among Nigeria’s diverse populations.
He added that Kano Golf Club would soon organize a national golf competition to mark the new Captain’s inauguration. This, he said, would be followed by a series of zonal, national, and international tournaments, including Pro-Am events aimed at raising the profile of the club and the sport.
Mr. Emeana also appealed to members of the Kano Golf Club to support and cooperate with his administration’s vision of improving the golf course and upgrading existing facilities in order to elevate the standard of the game.
Responding on behalf of the victorious visiting team after receiving a giant trophy from Mr. Emeana, the Captain of Katsina Golf Club, Major General Junaid S. Bindawa (rtd), said golf is rapidly gaining popularity in Katsina State, especially among both the youth and the elderly.
He noted that apart from Polo—introduced and first played in Katsina in 1924—and football, which remains a globally dominant sport, golf is now emerging as the next major sporting attraction in the state.
General J.S. Bindawa further revealed that Katsina Golf Club has concluded arrangements to host major national tournaments, one of which will be sponsored by the state government, underscoring the growing institutional support for the sport in the region.
