Al Ittihad forward George Ilenikhena, Alverca left-back Isaac James and LASK forward Moses Usor have received their first Super Eagles call-ups for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. PETER AKINBO profiles the three new invitees.
Head coach Eric Chelle named a 24-man squad on Thursday for Nigeria’s Group L campaign, with the Super Eagles set to host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29. Co-hosts Tanzania are also in the group.
George Ilenikhena (Al Ittihad)
The Lagos-born forward began his career with French side Amiens before moving to Royal Antwerp, where he continued his development and subsequently earned a move to Monaco.
Ilenikhena rose to prominence at Monaco, particularly with his performances in the UEFA Champions League, where he continued to attract attention with his displays.
He joined Al Ittihad earlier this year but initially struggled with fitness and found it difficult to break into the team. That situation has changed this season, however, with the 20-year-old scoring six goals and providing two assists in nine matches across all competitions.
Ilenikhena previously represented France at youth level but has committed his international future to Nigeria. His call-up comes at a time when Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu have both dealt with injury problems, and he will now be in contention to make his Super Eagles debut against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Isaac James (Alverca)
The Portugal-based left-back has been called up largely because of the injury to Zaidu Sanusi, which has left Chelle short of options in that position.
The 22-year-old has impressed in the role for his club and will hope to carry that form into the national team if given the chance.
James is also in the squad for the friendly against Russia on October 6, giving him another opportunity to stake his claim at international level.
Moses Usor (LASK)
Usor enjoyed a superb 2025/26 season with Austrian side LASK, helping the club win the league and cup double.
The club also qualified for the Champions League for the first time in its history, adding further significance to the 24-year-old forward’s impressive campaign.
Usor is another player Nigerians are eager to see in action for the national team as he begins his journey with the Super Eagles.
