THE Northern Reform Organisation (NRO) has thrown its weight behind the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria over their recent assessment of the country’s worsening condition, describing the intervention as courageous, forthright and deeply patriotic.
News Point Nigeria reports that the NRO, in a press statement dated August 8, 2026, said the concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops reflected the severe hardships confronting ordinary Nigerians and should be treated as an urgent call for national reflection and corrective action.
The organisation said the bishops had demonstrated exemplary moral leadership and a profound sense of national responsibility by choosing to speak publicly and candidly about critical national issues rather than limiting their concerns to private engagements with government officials.
According to the NRO, the intervention by the Catholic Bishops transcends partisan and sectional interests, reflecting what it described as a sincere commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, the preservation of national unity and the long-term success and stability of the present administration.
The organisation said it fully associates itself with the concerns expressed by the bishops and endorses their call for urgent national introspection and corrective action.
It identified widespread economic hardship, growing insecurity, governance deficits and the erosion of public confidence in state institutions among the issues that deserve serious attention.
The NRO stressed that these challenges were not merely political arguments but realities being experienced daily by millions of Nigerians, warning that they should not be dismissed or subjected to political interpretation and what it described as “the sophistic arguments of the political voice of government and its high minions.”
It therefore called on well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organisations, professional bodies and other patriotic stakeholders to lend their voices to the bishops’ intervention.
According to the organisation, rescuing Nigeria from its present challenges is a collective responsibility requiring honesty, courage and constructive engagement.
NRO urges Federal Government to look beyond official narratives
The Northern Reform Organisation also urged the Federal Government to reflect deeply on the issues raised by the Catholic Bishops and appreciate the true depth of what it described as the country’s current survival problem.
The organisation expressed concern that the reality facing Nigerians could be deeper than the reassuring narratives frequently presented through official channels.
It argued that genuine leadership requires more than acknowledging inconvenient truths and uncomfortable realities, stressing that such realities must be met with sincerity, transparency, urgency and decisive policy action.
The NRO said Nigeria had reached a critical moment in its history and urged the government and other stakeholders to treat the bishops’ intervention as a timely and patriotic contribution to the national conversation rather than criticism for its own sake.
It expressed hope that the intervention would become a catalyst for meaningful reforms capable of restoring public trust and confidence, strengthening democratic governance, promoting equity and justice, and placing Nigeria firmly on the path to recovery, national renewal and shared prosperity.
The organisation further linked that aspiration to the promises made by President Bola Tinubu while campaigning for office, urging that the current challenges confronting Nigerians receive the seriousness they deserve.
