A PASTOR has been shot dead and several worshippers abducted after heavily armed bandits attacked Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Isegun, in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
News Point Nigeria reports that the violent attack, which occurred on Tuesday evening, sent shockwaves through the border community that lies close to Kogi State, an area that has recently witnessed escalating insecurity.
Eyewitness footage obtained by News Point Nigeria shows worshippers gathered inside the church for an ongoing programme when sudden gunshots shattered the calm. Panic erupted as church members scrambled for safety, ducking behind chairs and crawling to avoid the flying bullets.
Despite initial efforts by the congregants to take cover, the attackers estimated to be several in number forced their way into the building after firing repeatedly from outside.
In the video, one of the gunmen is seen collecting bags and valuables left behind by fleeing worshippers, while others gained entry through the church’s main gate. At least two of the gunmen wore masks to conceal their identities, and another was seen wielding a flashlight as they moved through the premises.
A resident, Mr. Ayo, who spoke to News Point Nigeria, said the church was conducting a programme ahead of its scheduled night vigil when the bandits struck.
“They came suddenly and began shooting directly at the people inside the church,” he said. “The pastor was shot dead immediately, alongside another member. Many others were taken away by the attackers.”
Another resident, who requested anonymity out of fear of reprisal, said the attack happened shortly after 6 p.m., throwing the entire community into confusion and fear.
He added that local vigilante groups mobilised quickly and engaged the attackers in an attempt to prevent further casualties and more abductions.
Residents told News Point Nigeria that Eruku and neighbouring areas have come under multiple attacks in recent times, particularly because of their proximity to the Kogi border, a corridor increasingly exploited by criminal elements.
The latest incident has intensified calls for stronger security presence and coordinated operations to protect border communities vulnerable to bandit incursions.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the attack in a telephone conversation with News Point Nigeria on Tuesday night. He disclosed that the assailants were confronted by security operatives, who repelled the attack.
“Yes, the community is under attack. I am presently in touch with my DPO and we learnt it was repelled immediately, but one person was killed. That’s all I can say for now,” he said.
Security sources, however, and residents insist that the casualty figure is higher than the official police statement.
As of the time of this report, efforts are underway to locate and rescue the abducted worshippers, while security reinforcements have reportedly been deployed to the area.
