THE Nasarawa State Police Command has intercepted 174 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition and arrested a suspected arms trafficker along the Toto–Abaji Road as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal arms trafficking and enhance public safety across the state.
News Point Nigeria reports that the suspect, identified as Abubakar Abdullahi, was arrested by operatives attached to the Toto Division during a routine patrol operation conducted on June 22, 2026.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Lafia by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel.
According to Nansel, the arrest forms part of the command’s sustained campaign against the proliferation of illegal arms and other threats to public safety.
He explained that officers intercepted the suspect during the patrol and, upon conducting a thorough search, discovered 174 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition concealed in his possession.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect could not provide any satisfactory explanation regarding the source, ownership, or intended destination of the ammunition,” Nansel stated.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspect remains in custody while investigators intensify efforts to uncover the criminal network behind the illegal movement of the ammunition and apprehend other accomplices connected to the operation.
Nansel added that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and identify all individuals involved.
Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, reaffirmed the command’s determination to combat all forms of criminality, particularly the illegal proliferation of arms and ammunition.
The police commissioner warned criminal elements operating within and around the state to abandon their unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law.
He noted that the command has strengthened intelligence-led policing, surveillance operations, and strategic deployments in various parts of the state to enhance security and prevent criminal activities.
“There will be no safe haven for criminals in Nasarawa State. We are determined to identify, track, and bring every offender to justice,” CP Mohammed said.
The commissioner also reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging members of the public to remain law-abiding and continue their legitimate activities without fear.
He further appealed to citizens to support security agencies by providing timely, credible, and actionable information that could assist ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
Reiterating the command’s resolve, Nansel stated that the Nasarawa State Police Command remains committed to its policy of zero tolerance for crime and will continue to deploy all lawful means to ensure the security, safety, and well-being of residents across the state.
