THE Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has urged editors and journalists to promote responsible journalism practices.
Arising from its 2025 biennial national convention, with the theme, “Nation’s Security Future: Harnessing Diversity for Peace/Stability and the Media’s Role”, held on June 27, 2025, in Enugu, the convention, in a communiqué signed by NGE President, Eze Anaba and the General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, also tasked the media and government to prioritize peace and inclusion, and work towards building a stronger, more united Nigeria.
The convention emphasized that a nation’s security and stability can be enhanced by leveraging its diversity, with the media playing a crucial role in promoting this goal.
Otter key resolutions include government should equip the military and other security agencies with requisite and modern weapons needed to ensure security; Security agencies should step up intelligence gathering and be proactive in handling security challenges; The legislature should look into laws that inhibit media practices in the spirit of democracy; and The NGE should explore ways to benefit members by working with the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) to establish a Media Trust Fund.
During the convention, the NGE re-elected Eze Anaba as its new president to pilot the affairs of the association for the next two years.
The guild also elected Sabastine Abu as Deputy President while Kabir Garba, Sheddy Ozonne and Hamza Idris, were elected unopposed as Vice-President West, East and North respectively.
Others elected included Onuoha Ukeh as Secretary; Gabriel Akinadewo, Assistant Secretary; Iyobosa Uwugiaren, Treasurer; and Charles Kalu, Social/Publicity Secretary.
Standing Committee members were also elected for West, East and North.
“The Guild commended Governor Peter Mbah for hosting the convention and for his developmental strides in the last two years,” the communiqué added.
