SENATOR Rufai Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ending his membership of the party with immediate effect.
News Point Nigeria reports that Hanga, the NDC’s only senator from northern Nigeria and the current Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the party chairman of Najeria Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The lawmaker said his decision followed “careful reflection and personal deliberation,” adding that his resignation takes immediate effect.
“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” the letter reads.
“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”
Hanga expressed appreciation to the ward executive committee and members of the party for the support and cooperation he received during his time in the NDC.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party,” he said.
“I cherish the relationships built and the experiences gained during our political activities together.
“I request that my name be formally removed from the party register at the ward level.”
The senator, however, did not disclose his next political move or indicate whether he intends to join another political party.
His resignation leaves the Nigeria Democratic Congress without representation in the Senate from northern Nigeria.
