FORMER Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared that his anticipated bid for the presidency in 2027 will mark his final attempt to lead Nigeria, signalling what could be the closing chapter of a long-standing political ambition.
News Point Nigeria reports that Atiku, who has contested for the nation’s highest office multiple times, made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with ARISE TV, where he reflected on his political future and the stakes ahead.
Responding to a question on whether turning 80 by 2027 would heighten the significance of the race for him, the former vice-president said it would likely be his last outing.
“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher and I believe that will be my last outing,” he said in response to the question posed during the interview.
The African Democratic Congress chieftain reiterated his commitment to Nigeria, while acknowledging that both time and prevailing political realities would make the 2027 election his final shot at the presidency.
Atiku also stressed the importance of unity within the opposition, urging party leaders and stakeholders to set aside personal ambitions and work towards building a formidable coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He further expressed concern over the current state of the nation, pointing to economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges as key issues requiring urgent attention, noting that experienced leadership is critical at this time.
Maintaining that Nigeria still holds vast potential, the former presidential candidate said bold reforms and inclusive policies would be necessary to unlock growth and development across the country.
Atiku, who served as vice president between 1999 and 2007, has remained a consistent contender in Nigeria’s presidential elections, cementing his place as one of the most recognisable figures in the country’s democratic journey.
