THE honeymoon between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government may soon be over, as the former has hinted on embarking on an industrial action to press home its demands over the unresolved 2009 Agreement.
This is even as the union in its assessment of the President Bola Tinubu two-year administration lamented the institutional weaknesses, bureaucratic inefficiencies and endemic corruption that has undermined governance at all levels.
The union asked the Federal Government to release the N150 billion revitalisation fund.
The New President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, stated this at a press conference in Abuja, on Friday.
Piwuna alleged that the government is benefiting from the insecurity plaguing some parts of the country, which is why the issue persists without a solution.
The new ASUU President, who decried the level of implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, called on the present administration not to test its resolve, adding that it has delayed embarking on strikes for about a year.
He said: “We think that the Yayale Ahmed Committee has worked hard, and that we have finished the work with them, and that we need to hear from them. We haven’t heard from them, and we think that they should go back.
The Yayale Ahmed Committee should meet their principals and get back to us as soon as possible. We have exhausted our patience in waiting for this renegotiated agreement.”
While expressing displeasure with enormous challenges from hostile work environment and debilitating conditions of service among members.
