Kano Governor Revives Skills Institutes, Empowers Over 1,100 Graduates

IN a major push to tackle unemployment and boost self-reliance among Kano’s youth, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has distributed empowerment packages to 1,130 graduates of six specialized entrepreneurship skills institutes across the state.

The disbursement, held at a colourful ceremony in the Coronation Hall of Kano’s Government House on Saturday, was announced by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. The event was attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, and political leaders, who hailed the initiative as a step towards sustainable economic development.

Governor Yusuf, in his address, described the programme as “rekindling hope, restoring dreams, and unlocking the enormous potential of young people” to become self-reliant, productive, and innovative contributors to Kano’s economy.

He noted that the six institutes were originally established during the tenure of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso to equip youths with practical skills, but were shut down by the previous administration. His government, he said, had revived them to fulfill their original mission.

“Today, each graduate is leaving here not only with a certificate but also with an empowerment package relevant to their chosen trade,” Yusuf said. “By reviving these institutes and providing both tools and seed capital, we are reducing unemployment, curbing youth restiveness, and promoting self-reliance.”

    Breakdown of the Empowerment Packages:

Informatics Institute, Kura (250 graduates): Laptop computers and phone repair kits.

Livestock Institute, Bagauda (140 graduates): Bulls, feed, and veterinary medication.

Driving Institute, Kumbotso (250 graduates): Driving licences and certificates.

Nigerian TAX Reform - Federal Goverment

Horticulture Institute, Bagauda (200 graduates): Modern gardening tools.

Fisheries Institute, Bagauda (200 graduates): Fingerlings, weighing scales, and tarpaulin ponds.

Film Institute, Tiga (90 graduates): Digital cameras.

Governor Yusuf urged the beneficiaries to see the items and funding as seeds to be nurtured into thriving businesses that would create jobs and improve livelihoods.

NNPP leader and founder of the institutes, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso represented by the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Ahmad Ajuji, commended the Governor for reviving the programme and wished the graduates success in their entrepreneurial journeys.

Also speaking, the Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented by his Chief of Staff and Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Munir Sanusi, praised Yusuf’s “purposeful leadership” and vision for a prosperous Kano.
